Think twice before you use the new WhatsApp ‘Stories’ feature. Here’s why.
If you are not aware yet, WhatsApp just copied Snapchat, Instagram (and recently Facebook) to launch their own version of ‘Stories’ feature. This new addition to the WhatsApp messenger is called ‘Status’ and it allows users to post… well, you know what Stories does.
We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature. Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.
Here’s why you should really think twice before you use this Status feature and it’s because of one very simple reason:
“Everyone you’ve ever known, made contact with (physical or non physical) and had business deals are all on your WhatsApp list”.
WhatsApp is not like your social media platform. It’s one of the oldest messenger that you have been using since the beginning of time. This means you ex-boss is there. The plumber you called last year is in there. You client that you need to impress every time you meet, is in there. Your aunts and uncles are in there. Well, you get the point.
So if you don’t plan to reveal your wake up face, or your drunk-party mumbles, or your outings with friends (when you pretended to be sick to your boss) exposed to the people that are totally irrelevant, then think twice before using the Status feature. Just keep your daily updates to Snapchat (if you are still on it) or Instagram Stories.
But of course, WhatsApp allows you to set the privacy on who can or cannot view your Status videos but hey, as I mentioned earlier.. it’s the oldest messenger you’ve used and you probably have 2000 phone numbers in WhatsApp that you probably have no time to select one by one.
So there you go. Just a friendly advice, but seriously, what do you think of this ‘Stories’ feature on WhatsApp? Leave a comment below.
